St. Jude's

This is a serious post. I recently participated with the "Up 'Til Dawn" Event over at Bentley University, writing letters to people asking them to donate money to St. Jude's. St. Jude's is a hospital for children with cancer and it not only treats them, but it helps them deal with their fatal illness. If you get the chance, please donate to them, they need all the help we can give them.

Teen Attempts to Rob Man, Man Takes Him Out To Dinner

Copied Directly From NPR All of the following is property of NPR

Julio Diaz has a daily routine. Every night, the 31-year-old social worker ends his hour-long subway commute to the Bronx one stop early, just so he can eat at his favorite diner.

But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn.

He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife.

"He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, 'Here you go,'" Diaz says.

As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm."

The would-be robber looked at his would-be victim, "like what's going on here?" Diaz says. "He asked me, 'Why are you doing this?'"

Diaz replied: "If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money. I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me ... hey, you're more than welcome.

"You know, I just felt maybe he really needs help," Diaz says.

Diaz says he and the teen went into the diner and sat in a booth.

"The manager comes by, the dishwashers come by, the waiters come by to say hi," Diaz says. "The kid was like, 'You know everybody here. Do you own this place?'"

"No, I just eat here a lot," Diaz says he told the teen. "He says, 'But you're even nice to the dishwasher.'"

Diaz replied, "Well, haven't you been taught you should be nice to everybody?"

"Yea, but I didn't think people actually behaved that way," the teen said.

Diaz asked him what he wanted out of life. "He just had almost a sad face," Diaz says.

The teen couldn't answer Diaz — or he didn't want to.

When the bill arrived, Diaz told the teen, "Look, I guess you're going to have to pay for this bill 'cause you have my money and I can't pay for this. So if you give me my wallet back, I'll gladly treat you."

The teen "didn't even think about it" and returned the wallet, Diaz says. "I gave him $20 ... I figure maybe it'll help him. I don't know."

Diaz says he asked for something in return — the teen's knife — "and he gave it to me."

Afterward, when Diaz told his mother what happened, she said, "You're the type of kid that if someone asked you for the time, you gave them your watch."

"I figure, you know, if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right. It's as simple as it gets in this complicated world."

Over 3,500 members of the Cheap Ass Gamer online community responded to a survey on Xbox 360 console reliability. 59% reported at least one failure and at least 67% of their consoles have failed!Of course, this is a self-selected gaming forum poll. Therefore, you should take this with a grain of salt. With a poll that has no proof that any of these responders own an Xbox, or if they're Xbox actually broke, you can't believe this poll.

Lou Merloni Retired

The pride of Framingham, MA called it a career. Lou was one of my favorite players, even though he wasn't an All-Star. He had the heart (and the name) that all Sox fans love. Seeing him play at Fenway, and chanting "LOUUUUUUUUUUU" as he went to the plate or got a hit is something I will never forget. I even remember him coming to my elementary school and signing autographs for all the kids. It's still sitting on my shelf, right next to my Hank Aaron and Jason Varitek autographs.

Thanks for all your hard work Lou, you will be missed.

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground

I just got this game on Tuesday, and I'm already a huge fan. I forgot how much I loved skateboarding games. There is just so much to do in this one. The environments are huge, and I haven't even made it to every part of the city. There is also a lot of different things to do, like advancing a career doing skate competitions and making videos, rigging, and skating huge gaps.

I'm about a fourth of the way through the career, but there is so much to do outside of that. There are mini-challenges outside of the career. You have to grind a certain distance, go off a jump and land past certain markers. There is also a "Tony Hawk Classic" mode where you can play challenges like you would in the early Tony Hawk games.

I do recommend picking this up if you can find it for a good price. Full price might be a stretch, but for 40 bucks or less, you have to give it a shot.

Quick Check-in

Haven't posted in a while, so here is the breakdown about what's happening in my neck of the woods.
  • The picture a day project is off to a good start. It's going to be a long, long time before it's done, so no worries on this front.
  • Semester 1 is almost over. I'm looking forward to doing no work next semester.
  • Still haven't seen Juno.
  • I've been watching a lot of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." It is a fantastic and hilarious show, I recommend it to everyone.
  • I have not been keeping up with my resolutions, so I'm not even going to worry about them any more.
  • Ubuntu has been really fun to use. I still prefer OS X over it, but it's passable. The only issue is that I cannot get my sound to work, so that has become sort of a turn off to booting my laptop up with Ubuntu running.
  • I got Pirates 3 the other day. I forgot how great of a movie that was.
So that's about it for now. I'll post some more awesome links when I come across them.
